November Sock Review: Gyspy Stardust

Rocking your socks off!!

Put on your favorite Stevie Nicks album and grab your needles, cause Gypsy Stardust, our yarn dyer for this month, is rocking your way with an exclusive blend just for us- Gypsy Yarnbox. It's a 75% Superwash Merino, 15% Nylon, and 10% Tencel fingering weight yarn that will have you singing "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around". With 100 grams and 433 yards per skein you'll be saying "Don't Stop" knitting, and I'm "Never Going Back Again" to basic yarns.

(Top) Dragon Fire / Maleficent / Mermaids
(Bottom) Poison Apple / Gypsy Danc

This month we asked the talented Nathalia Vasilieva to design the sock for this box. Her use of texture in her Belle Du Jour pattern is balanced well with the colors of the yarn. We love the floats that create the diamond check pattern.

Gypsy Stardust has shared with us a little about their dying process. This is really fun for us to see how yarn is dyed, how colors are chosen, and the process to pull a line together.

Free Pattern Friday: Lacy Loves

There are great deals on Black Friday, but nothing beats free! This week we're sharing two lacy patterns we love. These are perfect for those single skeins of fingering weight yarn we all have in our stash.

The Ashton Shawl by Dee O'Keefe is a personal favorite. This is a perfect way to try lace knitting for the first time.

The Peachy Skinny Scarf by Samantha Roberts uses granny squares for an ultra chic lace motif.

We recommend Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts Reinvent, Lattes and Llamas Masquerade, or Holiday Yarns Silver Sock: all available in the Yarnbox Overstock Store.

The Lomond Hat by Littletheorem is in our queue for keeping warm this winter.

Once Upon A Time by Louti 2012 are simple cabled fingerless gloves to help keep off the chill.

The Mecha Mobius by Diane L. Augustin would look beautiful in the colorful variegated tones in Big Squeeze!

These Simple Chunky Cable Crochet Slippers by Tamara Kelly are perfect for keeping your toes warm in the evening.

October Classic Review: Ancient Arts

A modern take on an ancient craft.

Working with sticks and string truly is an ancient art that has been perfected over the centuries. Think of all the modern knitting and crochet techniques that have surfaced in the last century alone. The dying processes of Ancient Arts Fiber Crafts mixes contemporary and old world techniques that give their hand dyed yarns such a vibrant pop that highlights and accentuates the high quality fibers in each of their yarn.
We have 2 different bases to share with you this month. The first yarn is "Big Squeeze" which is a bulky weight yarn made of 100% SW Merino. This yarn has 141yds/128 meters with 4oz/115g skein. Which gives you 282 yards to play with. We actually got slightly larger than normal skeins for you so you have a but more to work with than what you might find in stores.
Bulky Weight Colors (left to right top to bottom)
Mineral - Bright / Warm
Abalone - Bright / Warm
Pull Up Your Socks - Bright / Cool
Amethyst - Muted / Cool
She Sells Sea Shells - Muted / Warm
Frolic - Either / Warm
Blue Spruce - Muted / Warm
Great Blue Heron - Muted / Cool

"Reinvent" is a light fingering weight made of 49% Wool, 34% Mohair, 11% Nylon, 4% Acrylic, and 3% Silk. It has 437 yards per 100 gram skein.  Both yarns are dyed with low impact, environmentally friendly dyes that preserves this ancient world!

Fingering Weight Colors (left to right, top to bottom)

Kismet + Beaujolais Noveau - Bright / Warm
Cherry Blossom + Corfu - Bright / Cool
Fog Warning + Roaring Twenties - Muted / Cool
Moussaka + Tranquility - Muted / Warm

We have four designs for you this month. The first two knit designs are done by Lisa McFetridge. Her fair isle "Fair and Squares Hat and boot toppers" is a cold weather project that combines geometric shapes with a soft touch of a floral border.

Made for the bulky weight wool, her "Autumn Glow" hat and cowl set is going to become a favorite I am sure of many of you! The texture really sets off the short color repeat, giving the pebbled surface a gorgeous glow!

For our crochet designers we have the fingering piece "Horizon Shawl" designed by Esther Chandler.
This is a lovely textured piece with a beautiful crescent shape that makes it easy to wear and accessorize in with your favorite fall wardrobe.

The bulky piece "Alba Cowl" is by Angelia Robinson and it's open work and geometric texture makes this like a piece of fiber jewelry.

Free Pattern Friday: Triangles

Happy Friday everyone! This week, we're celebrating beauty in simplicity. Basic shapes are a great way to bring a bit of color to our crafting. Triangles are a hot design element right now, so we've got a great batch of triangle related patterns.

Arrow by Matilde Skår is a fun symetrical design in two colors of fingering weight yarn.

Kites by Teleri from with2hands is a great way to add color to a grey day!

This Triangle Pillow by  Solveig Grimstad can co-ordinate to any room with a couple colors of DK weight yarn. We recommend Mitu by Rauma Garn, recently featured in Yarnbox Classic.

And finally, Tiny Tapestry Triangles by Maria Sommer is a fun and quick notebook cover to bring some style to the everyday.
